Square to Round Pan Conversion (Area Math, Table, When Not to Convert)

By Xin He Jia · 2026-09-01

An 8-inch square and an 8-inch round are not interchangeable: the square holds about 27% more batter.

The formula

equivalent round diameter = side × 1.128

Square ↔ round equivalents

SquareEqual-area round
6" square≈ 6.8" round
7" square≈ 7.9" round
8" square≈ 9.0" round
9" square≈ 10.2" round
10" square≈ 11.3" round

When not to convert

Chiffon needs tube-pan walls; brownies want square corners; madeleines want shells. Same area ≠ same cake.

Tall cakes: volume

Very different pan heights: multiplier = target volume ÷ original volume.
