Resonant Breathing: The 6-Breaths-Per-Minute Rhythm (Exact Timing)

By Xin He Jia · 2026-09-27

Resonant breathing (also called coherent breathing) is the slow, even rhythm used in most heart-rate-variability biofeedback research: about 5 to 6 breaths per minute. That's not a random slow pace — it sits on the cardiovascular system's natural resonance frequency (around 0.1 Hz), where heart-rate swings and breathing sync up and amplitude maxes out.

The exact rhythm

One round = 11 seconds. The arithmetic: 60 ÷ 11 = 5.5 breaths per minute, squarely inside the researched 5–6 bpm band. A standard practice dose is 5–10 minutes — unlike 4-7-8 (76 seconds for 4 rounds), this is a sitting practice, not a quick reset.

Why counting an 11-second phase fails

Longer phases make drift worse, not better. When you count 5.5 seconds by feel, early rounds run long (boredom) and later rounds run short (fatigue) — the rhythm wanders exactly when the practice is supposed to be even. Research protocols solve it with a pacing tone or a moving visual; home practice solves it the same way: external timing.

Centered Breathing (by Xin He Jia) ships with 4-7-8 and box breathing as built-in presets — for resonant work, its honest role is the pacing principle the app is built on: a big visible countdown that keeps each phase honest, and vibration cues you can follow with eyes closed. No account, no streaks, no upsell — offline, one-time purchase, 12 languages.
