Recipe Scaling Calculator: The Two Methods (and When Each One Lies)

By Xin He Jia · 2026-09-03

Two methods scale a recipe, and using the wrong one wrecks the bake: the multiplier method (multiply everything) and the area method (recompute for the pan). They are not two spellings of the same thing.

Multiplier method: same pan, more batches

multiplier = number of batches (2 batches = ×2)

Party quantities, two layers from an 8-inch recipe — the pan doesn't change, the batter scales by count. Best for batch-baking or twin pans.

Area method: different pan

multiplier = target area ÷ original area (round: (target Ø ÷ original Ø)²)

6→8 inches is ×1.78, not ×2. 8→9 is ×1.27, not ×1.1. Area goes with the square of diameter — intuition watches the diameter, the math squares it.
