Airport Pickup Signs on Your Phone: Bigger, Brighter, and You Already Own the Screen
There's a genre of photo every arrivals hall produces: someone squinting past a crowd, half a second too late, while the person they're meeting walks straight past a paper sign with 40-point type. The sign was fine in the living room. At gate B12, against a wall of other signs and fluorescent light, it wasn't. Your phone's screen is brighter than any printout you'll make — here's how to actually use it.
Why the phone wins (the physics)
- Brightness. A modern phone at full brightness emits 600–1000+ nits; paper reflects whatever the ceiling gives it. In a lit hall, emissive beats reflective.
- Contrast you control. High-contrast colors (yellow on black, white on red) read at distances paper prints often wash out.
- Zero prep. The sign materializes when the plane lands, and disappears when you're done — nothing to carry, nothing to recycle.
- Editable mid-mission. Gate changed? Name misspelled? You fix it standing in the same spot.
The details nobody thinks about until gate B12
- Readable distance scales with letter height. A rough rule from signage design: every inch of letter height buys about 10 feet of comfortable reading. Full-screen means the biggest letters you own.
- Long names or two lines. Names that overflow one line want either scrolling or a two-line layout — half a screen each.
- Battery. Max brightness drains fast; a sign app that keeps the screen awake should also be doing nothing else.
- One hand. You'll be dragging luggage with the other.
